Cutting processes commonly used in lightweight structures

2023-05-12

Ultrasonic cutting technology commonly used in lightweight structures: Nowadays, many industries use weight reduction as a driver for innovation. This mainly includes automotive technology, aerospace technology, and medical technology. Ultrasonic cutting provides favorable conditions for processing materials increasingly used in lightweight structures. Today, effective cutting of different materials can be achieved through replaceable blades, such as glass fiber or carbon fiber fabrics, foamed materials, leather, synthetic leather, rubber, thick cardboard, or paper. The frequency of ultrasound exceeds the hearing threshold, approximately above 20 kHz. The frequency used for cutting ranges from 20 kHz to 30 kHz. Ultrasound is generated by a piezoelectric transducer that makes the blade vibrate at a high frequency, producing strong effects at resonance with relatively low power requirements. As a result, when the environmental heat load is low, the cut slices are very clean. There is no need to worry about product adhesion to the blade. Moreover, this process has other advantages, making it especially suitable for cutting materials used in lightweight structures. Compared to mechanical milling, ultrasonic cutting does not produce any material waste. There are no debris, and the cut edges are smooth and clean, eliminating the need for finishing. Unlike waterjet cutting and similar operations, no cutting medium is required. The material being cut remains dry and tidy. The cutting depth can be adjusted as needed, and ultrasonic cutting also produces low noise. No special noise protection measures are required. Furthermore, unlike laser cutting, the surface of the cut material cannot form burned edges or release combustion gases, thus it cannot meet special quality evaluation standards. Due to its much lower acquisition and operating costs compared to other processes, ultrasonic cutting has become a practical technology required for many lightweight structure applications.
